Safin gets Russia's defence off to great start
Marat Safin, cruised to a 63 62 62 victory over Nicolas Massu. to get Russia's Davis Cup title defence off to the best possible start in Chile.

Massu had never previously lost a Davis Cup singles rubber in Chile but Safin, whose last Davis Cup rubber saw him seal Russia's triumph in Moscow last year, was in great form, converting six of seven break point opportunities and producing just ten unforced errors.

Pretty much talk about his practices at the court, that he asked for a private session and about some girl who came along with him, her name is Natalia Pkalina. And they said that Marat is a very simple and humble guy, he went to a supermarket and bought some water, fruits and other stuff, and the fact that he likes to cook all his meals at the resort that the Russian Team stayed. All the pics was taken yesterday in La Serena.

A group of workers is doing its best to leave impeccable the almost 10000 seats where the public will stay during the Davis Cup. The noise of the workers is the only sound that alters the quietness of Campus Trentino de la Serena until Marat Safin appears.
The 27 years old player is the big star of the Russian team and every time he appears the club prepares a system of security which is equal to the number of journalists there.
“I won’t speak today” said yesterday the single-match player of the world champions.
The ex ATP n°1 player, author of last year’s Davis Cup title victory of the Russians, already caused a “slaughter” in the 4th region.
With his idol fame, he was the first European player to occupy the central court. He didn’t want the press to attend his practise match with Yuri Shuckin.
Safin ordered to not let the press in. Apparently he didn’t want them to see him throwing away tennis balls after a couple of bad shots.
Later, like a rock star, he disappeared from his changing room to the car that’s carrying him around. (Yeah....you rock! )
And still, this Russian who speaks the better Spanish after all the years spent practising in Valencia, showed us to have simple habits.
Yesterday night, like anybody else, he went to a local supermarket, took a trolley and filled it with stuff. (OH MY GOD he went to the supermarket! Can you believe this? )!!!!Games ,fruits ,mineral water, where among the things he bought, while a group of kids came to him to ask for autographs and pictures.
Even if in the hotel he’s got the chance to have the best food from chefs, Safin likes doing things by himself, like in the time he was a perfect stranger. The eternal atp tour suitor and lady killer is accompanied in this tour by his friend Natalia Pkalina, a brunette with stylized curves, who’s been going with him in every place with such a rush, like he had so many urgent things to do. (I bet somebody will go crazy about this…. )
The other Safin’s mates are practising in the lateral courts. The injured Dimitri Tursunov is playing normally, as well as Igor Andreev, who said that there is not much difference with the court of the Vina del Mar ATP where he reached cuarter-finals. “Basically it’s the same, the ? and the weather.
It felt good to play in Vina, physically and for my tennis, as I’ve seen improvements in the last days. Am I going to play this weekend? I don’t know, but I’d like to!” he said. (Good luck!! ) "
