The Good, The Bad and The Marat

October 23, 2006

Joel Drucker

I’m looking forward to Marat Safin’s San Jose debut. It’s always interesting to see how a big name handles his first-ever appearance at a tournament. In Safin’s case, that SAP Open effort will be compounded by the factors that have for nearly a decade made him one of the more beguiling characters. In a sport of individuals, he is even more so.

It’s never certain with Safin if it’s best to start assessing him by what he does off the court or on it. Let’s start outside the lines. Safin often gives off every indication that away from tennis he heartily enjoys the ample financial and lifestyle rewards that accompany wealth and fame attained at a young age. Whether dining with a large group of friends, casting his eye on one of the many women who have captured his fancy or strolling through the luxurious hotels he occupies while on tour, Safin is exquisitely boyish, rather charming in his odd pursuit of happy feelings and the awareness of their toll on his tennis. Pushed into tennis by his mother, shipped off to Spain to refine his game, Safin is at once a lifelong tennis devotee and an anguished rebel. “I never chose anything in my life,” he once told me, “so how can I be expected to make the right decisions? Live and learn, right?”

While at one level Safin is the ultimate example of the kid who is damned by being told how talented he is, his recognition of his shortcomings humanizes him. Yet when the Safin machine is humming, it purrs with everything that makes contemporary tennis a remarkable showcase of athleticism. Power oozes from his every pore, most notably from Safin’s massive serve and a backhand so efficient that it earns a rare term ascribed to a two-hander: elegance. For a man 6’ 4”, Safin is also exceptionally agile, moving with ballerina-like grace and the fluid steps of a man who has indeed endured many hours of nuanced footwork drills. These multi-faceted qualities are rare in a tennis player, and have earned him two Grand Slams, victories punctuated by wins over such heavyweights as Pete Sampras (a straight-set whupping in the 2000 U.S. Open final) and Roger Federer (a scintillating five-set semi at the 2005 Australian).

So goes the good Marat. What’s sad is that too often for his own good the bad Marat has surfaced. It’s striking to me that a player as skilled as Safin went more than four years between Slam triumphs. It’s also depressing to see how much his concentration wavers from match to match, month to month, year to year. There have been days when Safin can’t make a first serve or forehand to save his life. I doubt he truly wants to be remembered for shattering dozens of racquets, or for more or less admitting at numerous press conferences that he has ostensibly thrown in the towel on his way to yet another surprising defeat.

Safin turned 26 this year. As he enters 2007, even he must know that a cat only has so many lives. He has, after all, publicly announced his intention to retire from tennis in four years. I find this rather puzzling, but perhaps it’s a way for the Russian to put a cap on his career, lower any pressures and enter what I call The Doris Day Phase of his career. I know I’m dating myself here, but Doris Day is known for her hit song, “Que Sera, Sera” - “whatever will be, will be.”

In other words, Safin is trying to ease the burden of expectation that’s accompanied his vast skills. The funny thing is, of course, that expectation is an illusion - it exists way outside the lines - and the only factor that truly matters for a tennis player is that singular moment defined strictly by competition. Tennis is not a beauty contest, nor judged like figure skating. It’s strictly a matter of what that player does in each match. It’s that simple – but not necessarily that easy. How Marat Safin keeps that in balance figures to make for some very interesting tennis in San Jose.

  • POST-MATCH INTERVIEW

Q. You gave it a good fight.
MARAT SAFIN: Yeah, well, yeah.

Q. What is your main emotion after that?

MARAT SAFIN: It's a pity, but I'm ‑‑ at the same time I'm pretty happy the way things are going. But I'm a little bit disappointed with the few things that happened to me in the first two sets. It shouldn't have happened, but unfortunately, that's the way it is.

But I consider I should have won in four; three, four sets. That's what happened to me in the first two. It's a mistake. This will be the first and last time it's going to happen to me, so...

Q. What's the reason for it?
MARAT SAFIN: I spoke already with my coach and with ‑‑ with my coach.

Q. When was the last time you played that well and lost?
MARAT SAFIN: Well, I don't know. Since a long time, I guess, been pretty long time I didn't play the same way. So for me it was a little bit surprising that I could ‑‑ unfortunately, I was pretty tense at the beginning of the match. So, you know, I didn't expect for a long time that I'm gonna play the same way.

So it's actually a little bit surprising for myself to be in such a good shape and play good tennis and be able to compete against top 10 players for five sets, you know, with a chance to win. So it's not really nothing wrong, but just it's small things that shouldn't happen at the age of 27, that's for sure.

Q. Is it your choice of shot or...
MARAT SAFIN: A few ‑‑ nothing to do with shots.

Q. How did you get back into the match after those first two sets?
MARAT SAFIN: Well, it was ‑‑ I should have gotten into the match a little bit earlier. But just the way things they were, I couldn't come into the match quicker. So I had to wait for two sets, you know, and then I start to play my tennis that I should have played from the beginning. The score was 2‑3 in a matter of minutes.

Then the fifth set, of course, my concentration went down a little bit. He made the early break. Then, of course, he was pumped up and he was ready to finish the match playing well.
If I would hold my serve a little bit longer in the fifth set, I think I would have a chance. But unfortunately my concentration and my ‑‑ everything went a little bit downhill, and he was just preparing himself for the fifth set. So it's a little bit unlucky.

Q. If you had got through that, do you think your game's at a level where you could have beaten Roger Federer down here?
MARAT SAFIN: Well, I just lost to Baghdatis. We're not talking about Roger Federer. Roger Federer is a different level person, different level player. The way he's moving right now, full of confidence. And, of course, after being the No. 1 in the world and winning 12 Grand Slams, how many he has, for the past five years. So I guess with the confidence that he has, I would play also the same way Roger does.

So it's tough to compete against him and have to compare to him. But he's the best by far, and he will be the best of tennis. So I don't think anybody in here on ATP Tour can be compared to him.

Q. Since Agassi and Federer, you were the one to have the most success on the Rebound Ace. The transition, how do you view it, the court characteristics?

MARAT SAFIN: I think the courts are pretty good, actually. They tried to make it as close as possible to Rebound Ace without being so soft. Because I think what's happened is a lot of people, they were complaining about the knee injuries and twisting their ankles. Well, it wasn't really my case. I was a little bit surprised when I heard it will be a different surface this year.

But it looks like they did a great job, you know, to make it as close as possible to Rebound Ace. But it's a little bit stiff, but you can play. I think it's great. They did a great job. Also with the balls.

Q. Are you encouraged by your form today for the rest of the year?

MARAT SAFIN: Yeah. I have to continue. I'm not gonna give up straightaway that I'm losing to Baghdatis. I mean, he's a top‑10 player. Just a pity I have to be out in a second round in a Grand Slam. It was a pretty long time ago that didn't happen to me. But actually for the past two years it happened, but it's not really the place I want to be.

But I have to deal with that. The year is pretty long, so I'll have my chances, that's for sure. Like I said before, I'm happy the way I'm playing and the results will come pretty quickly. So just keep continuing working. And thanks to my coach that he believes in me, I can come back. Thanks to all my team and let's make it happen.

  • 1st round post-match Interview

Q. How did you assess your match today? Straight sets, but it looked a bit up and down.
MARAT SAFIN: Well, it's a little bit tough to start the beginning of the season, especially when it's the first official match. It's not exhibition or something like that. So it's kind of difficult to play and be relaxed and play your best tennis.

So, you know, the first set was okay, but then I got a little bit tight. The guy started to play well. I think for the first match, it was a great one.

Q. Any parts of your game you've got to work on to progress further?

MARAT SAFIN: Just play more matches and it's gonna come up. I'm playing well, moving well. Knee doesn't hurt. I don't have any injuries. I think if I keep up this way, it's gonna be a good year.

Q. What does it take for you to be happy about your game?

MARAT SAFIN: Well, it's good to know that you can move around the court without any pain and you can move pretty well and you can play good tennis without any doubts on yourself. So I think it's pretty good feeling.

But also, you know, you need some confidence, build up the confidence, because I didn't play any great tennis lately.

So for me to start the year this way, I think it's just to continue.

Q. Going to need more confidence going into the harder part of the draw?
MARAT SAFIN: Yeah, I think I will need a little bit more, just a little bit more matches. But it's going to come up this way anyway. Big players like Baghdatis, Hewitt in the future. But it's getting much better, for sure. Second match. I already played a tough one today. It's going to work out well.

Q. I heard you have been doing snowboarding back in Europe. Did you find it fascinating?
MARAT SAFIN: Yeah, I think it's pretty cool.

Q. Are you any good at it?
MARAT SAFIN: I'm improving and improving, yeah.

Q. Not too many falls?
MARAT SAFIN: No. I'm alive, so I think it was good.

Q. What is your fear about the new surface?
MARAT SAFIN: I don't fear anything. I think it's great. The balls are great. Actually nothing to complain about. Just maybe the color is too bright for me, but it's just my personal opinion. I think otherwise, the speed of the ball is good enough to play good rallies and it suits to all the kind of players.
