SAN JOSE, California (AP) — Fourth-seeded Marat Safin advanced to the second round of the SAP Open with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory over wild card Scott Oudsema on Tuesday night.

Safin used a dink, his forehand and a backhand cross court shot in the tiebreaker to set up an ace for the victory.

“There were some tough conditions,” said Safin, who helped Russia beat host Chile in Davis Cup competition on Sunday. “It takes a little bit of energy to pack your bags after winning Davis Cup and flying 15 hours. I was only able to hit on the court today. Sometimes you have to do things you don’t like.”

Oudsema, who has yet to reach a singles final at any level, held his own against the former top-ranked player. When he got his first serve in, he won 91 percent of the points, including 17 aces. However, Oudsema only got 40 percent of his first serves in.
從未打進任何決賽的OUESEMA 面對前世界第一的高手並不勢弱。他的一發贏球率高達91%﹐還轟出17記ACE。不過﹐OUDSEMA 一發成功率只有40%。
“His shots have a lot of power and depth to them,” said Oudsema, who lost in the first round of his last two Challenger tournaments. “His level of play, right now, is higher than mine. I was working uphill.”

Safin, who has two Grand Slams among his 15 career titles, made his debut at the event. The closest he’s been to the San Francisco Bay Area was a trip to Yosemite National Park, near the Nevada border.
“I wanted to change my results,” he said. “I played in Europe the last eight years after Australia and every time I was out by the second round. I decided to come here and try my luck. I’m in the second round so maybe I can do better than in Europe.”

Safin has not won a tournament since the 2005 Australian Open. He’s been bothered by a left knee injury the past two years.
“It took me a year to really recover and play the kind of tennis I wanted,” he said.

Marat Safin makes his Northern California debut Tuesday evening, no doubt knocking the clay off his feet after this past weekend’s Davis Cup tie in Chile (won by Russia 3-2). “Why not try something in the States?” Safin said of his decision to come here. Long considered one of tennis’ biggest talents, the Russian is a player with enough juice on all sides to still be regarded as a potential threat to reach the highest echelon. Pay particular attention to his delicate footwork and exquisite backhand. On another note, Safin confesses that his biggest fear is going to the dentist – a visit he fears even more than playing the dreaded Fabrice Santoro, a vexing, disruptive slice-and-dicer whose lifetime record versus Safin is a snappy 7-2. “On second thought,” says Safin, “I have to think about what’s worse, playing Santoro or going to the dentist.”

Marat arrived early on Monday morning, he seemed okay when I drove him this afternoon, spent most of the time speaking Spanish with GGL's coach and whoever is working with MS this week. Not sure if I will see him for the rest of the week, but I really hope to sit and watch his match on Tuesday.
MART 星期一清晨抵達﹐今天下午我載他時他心情頗好﹐大部分的時間都用西班牙語跟GGL教練及他自己的隨行者聊天。不確定是否整個禮拜都能看到他﹐但我星期二鐵定會去觀賞比賽的。
Marat does not like my singing.
I know this because when Collide came on, I started singing along (quietly, I thought) and Marat reached over and turned the volume up. A lot. So I turned to him and said, is this your way of telling me you would rather hear him sing than me? And he said 'no no no! you were enjoying the song so I turned it up to HELP you' So I laughed out loud, and the two coaches in the back seat laughed at him. And I said 'okay, I see...' and he said 'No, I was trying to be nice. See, I cannot win!' That was funny. It was right at the end of the trip, and Marat had one freshly strung racket in his hand, so as he got out of the car, I said 'that's a pretty racquet in your hand, try not to break it today, okay?' and he said 'I'll be good today' (it was just practice anyway). Off they went, I was still laughing. (that was the only important part of our conversation, he and his coach and GGL's coach spent most of the trip speaking in Spanish).

當COLLIDE 這首歌播放時我才發現這點(MARAT 不喜她的歌聲 :p)﹐因為一開始我自己在那邊哼唱(我自己覺得是小小聲的)而MARAT 卻靠過來把聲音拉高﹐拉高很多...我忍不住問他﹐你是在暗示你寧願聽他唱也不想聽我唱嗎? 他說﹐"NO NO NO ﹐你唱得很愉快所以我也跟著大聲助興阿" 我大笑了﹐後座的兩位教練也跟著笑他。我告訴他"OK﹐我知道了" 然後他就"不是呀﹐我是想示好﹐可你看看﹐我反而搞砸了"。實在夠爆笑了。快到目的地時﹐MARAT 手拿一支全新的球拍﹐當他走出車外時我說"那拍子很漂亮﹐拜託今天別摔壞﹐OK ? " 然後他回我" 今天我會控制的 (反正今天只是練習嘛)。" 他們就離開了﹐我還是笑個不停 (這些是我們少數對話的重點﹐因為他﹑教練和GGL的教練一路都講西班牙語)

Anyway, I can't add anything to the match descriptions since I missed the first set. I will say something that I'm sure you already know if you've seen him in person. Marat can do anything with a racquet and ball that he wants to, I've never seen anyone like that. In practice yesterday, he was flipping the ball around between rallies and it looked odd but the ball always went exactly where he wanted it to. He did a few things like that during the match too. There was a ball on the court after a point and without even looking Marat walked up to and smacked his racquet on it and the ball went behind him and straight to the ball kid! He also did that thing where he caught the ball on his racquet in midair without it bouncing on the strings (right at the end of the match) and the crowd was so impressed they applauded him! He did all of these little tricks non-chalantly, like he wasn't even thinking about it, but every single time the ball did exactly what it was supposed to do. Neat-o.
總之﹐我沒法講太多比賽的細節﹐因為第一盤我沒趕上。我要談談一些有接觸過他本人都很清楚的事。MARAT 可以用球拍玩球﹐各種花招都會。我從來沒看過那麼厲害的.昨天練習的時候﹐在抽球中間他會讓把丟到空中﹐而且好奇怪喔﹐球都會跑到他想控制的位置。在比賽的時候﹐他也會玩球 (JS﹐MARAT 玩球真的很神!!超有球感的) 記得其中有一分結束之後﹐MARAT 根本看也沒看就走到球邊﹐用球拍一擊﹐球就正好飛到後面球童的面前!還有在比賽結束之前﹐他在空中用球拍接球﹐球儘量安穩地在拍上連一點彈跳都沒有﹐觀眾全部都看傻眼了﹐全場抱以熱烈掌聲!這些把戲對他來說好像與生俱來﹐好似他連想都沒想一樣﹐但每個球就是精準地落在該有位置﹐太酷啦!!
I spoke to him for a minute after the match, I was sitting near the door when he came to the trans office for his ride. I looked up at him and very quietly said 'you are a meanie' and kind of pouted at him. He looked at his shoes with this priceless look of guilt, so I said 'ah ha, that look of guilt on your face means you know exactly what I am talking about! You hurt my feelings and I cried myself to sleep last night!' He laughed and said 'oh no you didn't' Then he told me he had a doubles match today, stunningly at the other site (which by the way, means its FREE to see Marat play tonight), so I told him that was too bad, he didn't have a day off so he couldn't go anywhere fun. We talked about the court and the practice court (different speeds) and he said he adjusted (shrugged it off, said 'what can you do') and then he was off, but I think he had a little smile on his face.
比賽結束之後我跟他聊了一分鐘﹐我剛好坐在門邊而他正要等接泊車。我往上看著他然後輕聲地就"你是個壞蛋"﹐還有點嘟嘴巴。他看看自己的鞋子﹐露出迷人又帶著罪惡感的眼神﹐我便說"厚厚﹐你那罪惡感的眼神正表示你曉得我在講什麼了。你傷害了我﹐害我昨晚哭到睡著!"他笑了對我說 "oh, no﹐你沒有吧" 之後他告訴我今天他還有雙打比賽﹐而且是在另一個場地喔(意思也就是﹐今晚看MARAT打球是免費的)﹐我便回答他﹐唉那真不巧﹐他連一天假都沒有﹐不能出去玩玩。我們聊了比賽場地和練習場地 (速度不一樣)﹐他說他適應了 (跟著聳聳肩﹐說"不然又能怎麼辦")﹐之後便離開﹐不過我覺得他臉上有帶著一絲微笑。
Now that he's played on the arena court, I think he'll be okay for the rest of the week. It's a shame that the practice courts aren't exactly the same, but since he is one of the top guys, he can get onto the arena court whenever its empty so he should be okay.
現在他已經在比賽場打過﹐我想這禮拜應該是會OK的。實在很糟糕﹐練習場跟比賽場竟然不一樣﹐但他畢竟是大明星﹐只要球場空著他隨時可以使用的。
If I drive him again, I plan to have my revenge in the form of ABBA's Greatest Hits. Yes, I will sing along...

MODERATOR: Thank you, everybody, for your patience here. Marat is a two-time Grand Slam champion, a former World No. 1, and most recently added to his resume a Davis Cup title in December. He's going to be making a San Jose debut in 10 days. So Marat, welcome. From myself and all the staff at the SAP Open, we want to welcome you to San Jose for the first time.

Q. You'll be playing here on Tuesday night, February 13, feature match at 7:30?
MARAT SAFIN: Yes.

Q. Obviously you made a big splash here in 2000 when you beat Steve. Are you surprised you haven't won more majors since then?
MARAT SAFIN: No, because I had my chances. I made the finals in Australian Open, and I won two times; and since then I been injured a couple years. Every year I finished the round. I got injured the next year.
So it's very difficult to make a come-back straightaway, win a Grand Slam. So if I wouldn't be so much time injured I would do much better.
But otherwise I'm satisfied because I could, a lot of people didn't win any.
Q 2000年時你在這裡擊敗STEVE 引起很大的轟動﹐自己覺得驚訝嗎﹐從那時候就沒再贏很多大比賽了
MS 不會﹐因為我曾經有機會的。澳網兩度進決賽﹐也拿過兩次滿貫﹐之後我受傷了很長一段時間。每次在年終畫下美好句點時﹐隔年就傷了﹐復出後馬上要贏得滿貫又 不是說說就行﹐所以我想如果傷病少些的話﹐或許應該更有作為吧。不過﹐我其實很滿足啦﹐至少我還是贏過﹐有很多人都還沒呢。
Q. Where do you see your game right now?
MARAT SAFIN: Well 
, improving. And have very difficult, in the Australian Open I had my chance against (inaudible). But otherwise I'm playing very well and moving forward this season, and I think I'll have my chance to come back and I will definitely take them.
Q 自己怎麼評斷現在的狀態
MS 這個嘛﹐進步中﹐前陣子的澳網不免很難過﹐對於(收音不清)那場我本來有機會的﹐不過總的來說這個賽季打得很好也持續往前﹐而我相信時機終會來臨我勢必會及時把握的。
Q. Marat, why did you decide to play San Jose this year?
MARAT SAFIN: Well , kind of I want to change -- I wanted to change something because I've playing for the last few years in Europe.
And I decided why not try something in the states and a little bit earlier, just think of all the tours around the states, why not try it. I want to be doing something else rather than playing in Europe.
Q MARAT﹐今年怎麼決定到SAN JOSE 來呢
MS 嗯﹐想要改變一下吧﹐過去幾年都到歐洲去﹐今年想嘗試新的東西﹐於是想想為什麼不多參加美國的比賽﹐美國有那麼多巡迴賽﹐可以早一點來試試的。有別於過去 一貫歐洲賽事﹐今年我決定變換行程。(NOTE: JS 自己猜應該是配合國家DAVIS CUP 在智利比賽吧﹐不然往返歐洲與智利幾十小時﹐MARAT 會累翻的﹐純粹個人的推測......)
Q. Marat, after the Australian Open, the talk seems to be that there's Roger and then there's everybody else, that he's playing on a completely different level. I'm just wondering what your thoughts are about the way Federer is dominating the sport right now?
MARAT SAFIN: Obviously he's the best one on the tour. And he's going to be probably, if everything goes the same way he's going to be the best player of all times.
And nobody can stop him because nobody is as consistent as he is. And nobody is as talented as he is and the way he sees the game.
So, unfortunately, nobody can compete with him and be at the same level. And I don't see anybody to be there next to him. And even (inaudible) (Rafa Nadal, perhaps? 
), I don't think he'll be able to make, he will challenge Federer in the next year.
So I don't know, something has to happen to Roger for us to be somewhere near him.
Q MARAT﹐在澳網之後﹐大家都說網球現在有兩個層次﹐ROGER 及其他球手﹐他超越了大家到了另外一個境界。我很好奇目前你對ROGER 主宰網壇的看法如何
MS 很顯然地﹐他是巡迴球員中最棒的﹐不僅如此﹐假如一切順利發展下去﹐他將會是史上最佳的球員。沒有人能阻止這個趨勢﹐因為從沒有人像他那麼穩定﹐也從沒有 人有他那種洞悉一切球賽﹑神機妙算般的天份。是呀﹐很遺憾地﹐沒人能跟他競爭或者到達相同層次﹔甚至﹐除了他﹐我好像也看不出有誰能接他的班﹐即便是(收 音不清)...﹐我個人認為未來一年也無法威脅ROGER。所以﹐我實在不曉得阿﹐除非ROGER 怎麼了我們才可能跟他抗衡吧。
Q. What do you think about Andy's game right now? You obviously had an exciting match against him, and he's going to be in San Jose next month as well?
MARAT SAFIN: Well , he improved a lot. He's been playing some aggressive tennis, and he's improved his volleys much better backhand. And this work he's done with Jimmy Connors has given him the strategies on the court, much more confident and of course his game has improved and he worked through a lot of stuff.
And I think he's much more a solid player as he used to be before.
Q 那麼RODDICK 現在呢。先前你跟他有了一場激烈的較量﹐他也會到SAN JOSE 來
MS 嗯﹐他進步很多﹐現在的打法十分積極﹑截擊和反拍都比以前出色﹐他和CONNORS 擦出了成功的火花﹐場上戰術多元﹑更顯自信﹐當然他的比賽更精彩了﹐必定是花了不少心血與努力的。相較於過去﹐他的基本工夫更為紮實了。
Q. Where are you right now? Where are you calling from?
MARAT SAFIN: I'm in Moscow right now.
Q 你現在人在哪?你從哪裡打來的 ?
MS 我人在莫斯科 (註﹐MARAT 延後前往智利的行程﹐所以在莫斯科和朋友共度生日 :p)

Q. Obviously Hawkeye has played a real role with the electronic scoring. What are your thoughts on that? Do you see a change in the chair umpires? Are they doing their job? What are your thoughts on that?
MARAT SAFIN: Well , it's kind of, there's a lot of controversies with these things because some people like it and some people don't like it. And it gives us an advantage just in case. At an important point, you can (inaudible) the chair can decide the match.
And in this case I think the Hawkeye is the right thing to be there, even though some people don't like it.
But I think it's quite a good idea because it's difficult for the chair umpire to judge sometimes because the ball is flying so fast, he can't really see it and it's difficult for them to make a right decision.
Q 現在鷹眼重播系統扮演著重要角色﹐你有何見解﹐對於主審有影響嗎? 他們稱職麼﹐你怎麼看?
MS 這件事阿﹐是有一點 ...爭議仍舊不少﹐有些人喜歡有些人卻很討厭。它在特定的時候的確對選手較有利﹐在關鍵比分上﹐你能(收音不良)...主審一個判決可是能決定勝負的﹐ 在這種情況之下﹐鷹眼能發揮它的功效﹐雖然有些人還是不喜歡。不過﹐我想這玩意兒是不錯的﹐球速實在太快了﹐有時主審也很難明察秋毫。
Q. And also you've had a lot of times when you've been off the tour and had to sort of come back, and the whole tennis world saw what Serena did coming out of nowhere to win. What are your thoughts on her performance?
MARAT SAFIN: Well , I think she did a good job, even though I didn't see one match of hers. But I think it was very incredible because she was ranked 81 in the world, and I know that Petrova almost beat her. And pretty impressive score on the finals against Sharapova. She might have been playing great tennis and I'm pretty happy for her because to come back and win the Grand Slam, it's really nearly impossible.
Q 你有多次暫離網壇長時間﹑又再復出比賽的經驗.....這回大家看到小威莫名其妙冒出來贏了澳網﹐你覺得她表現如何
MS 嗯﹐雖然我沒看她比賽﹐但這絕對是很大的成就。她可是從排名81出發﹐一路過關斬將﹐中間還差點被PETROVA 擊敗﹐能走到最後實在很了不起。決賽對陣莎娃的比分懇殊﹐狀態太好了﹐我很為她高興﹐你知道一復出馬上就能奪取滿貫幾乎是不可能的任務阿。
Q. Speaking of Davis Cup, you obviously just came off a big win there, kicking off again next week. When you look at the U.S. team on paper, it's quite powerful with Roddick and Blake and others and it's more than 10 years since we won the championship. Why do you think it's so hard for U.S. to win on clay overseas; it seems to be its weakness?
MARAT SAFIN: It's not your favorite turf. There's nothing wrong about it. The players who play on the hard courts, it's just the way it is. You don't have many clay courts in the states. That's why a lot of Germans are on the hard courts. That's why they keep playing on the hard courts until they become professionals, but from there to try to learn how to play on clay, it takes much longer time than to learn how to play from clay -- move from clay to the hard court.
Q 說到DAVIS CUP﹐你不久前才立樹建功﹐下禮拜又要開始為今年的比賽出發。你看到美國隊的陣容吧﹐我們有RODDICK 和 BLAKE 等人﹐而十年來都沒能奪冠。你可否談談為什麼美國隊在外國的紅土總是打不好﹐似乎是很大的弱點阿
MS 這不是你們擅長的場地呀﹐沒有什麼錯嘛。球員習慣在硬地打球﹐如此而已。美國沒有很多紅土場地﹐也因此不少德國人現在也都在硬地練習﹐在轉職業前他們都在硬地訓練﹐轉職業後才不得不開始學習打紅土﹐而從硬地轉紅土比紅土轉硬地要花更長的時間適應。
Q. Even again on paper it's a very strong team, do you see them as the underdog going into the Czech Republic or do you see them as the favorite?
MARAT SAFIN: I think they're the favorite, but you can't underestimate the Czech, because they're a solid team. But I think on paper your team is looking better, but definitely has a lot of (inaudible) in the Czech Republic and they have pretty good doubles, as well as you. So every single match can decide the score in a tie.
So it's kind of very equal but on paper, of course, the states look better.

MS 我想美國勝算是較大的﹐但你不可低估捷克這個具有一定實力的隊伍。從陣容判斷你們較強﹐不過捷克有很多(收音不良) 而他們雙打也跟貴國一樣優秀。所以﹐每一場比賽都可能影響結果。陣容蠻旗鼓相當的﹐當然﹐美國隊要更勝一籌些。
Q. Speaking of instant replay, I know they don't have any in San Jose, is it your feeling there's a growing comfort of players using the system. I talked to several players in Australia actually stop this point to middle because they were wanted to check the call whereas in the beginning I didn't see that very often?
MARAT SAFIN: I think it's okay. We have to get used to it, but I think it's a good idea, because I know people have been complaining before that one wrong call from the chair decided the match on the wrong side, want an opportunity to check it for themselves, I think it's a very good one.
Q 談到立即重播系統﹐SAN JOSE 沒有這項設備﹐你覺得球員越來越適應/喜歡這系統了嗎。我在澳洲跟一些球員聊到﹐他們比到一半被要求中止來確認判決﹐但是一開始啟用時這現象還不普遍。
MS 我想這OK的。我們得要漸漸去習慣﹐而且這確實是好主意阿﹐畢竟我聽到不少人抱怨因為主審錯誤的判決導致不該贏的卻贏了﹐他們希望有機會能確認一切﹐那麼鷹眼是個好的選擇。
Q. Do you think it's a growing comfort in using the system?
MARAT SAFIN: Yes.
Q 所以你認為大家越來越習慣了
MS 是的
Q. I've been wanting to have you here the past six or seven years, and when you come to San Jose, what do you think about the player field, Roddick and Blake and Murray and Fish and what's your call when you come to San Jose?
MARAT SAFIN: I think it's pretty good tournament for the past, I don't know how many years, but -- well, since I've been playing already they have always a good draw. I guess it was always telling and (inaudible) was going there a lot of times and Murray won a tournament. This year they have a pretty good tour. And I think it's going to be very interesting and I want to come there and try to win it.
I didn't win a tournament for a long time and I'm looking forward to do it there. Why not? It's going to be my first one in two years.
Q 過去六年來我一直希望你能過來參賽﹐現在你終於要來了﹐對於參賽球手﹐RODDICK ﹑BLAKE﹑MURRAY 和FISH 你怎麼看? 來SAN JOSE有何自我期許呢
MS SAP 公開賽始終辦得有聲有色﹐我不知道它有幾年歷史了﹐嗯﹐我很久前來過﹐也知道大會總能吸引頂尖好手過來。大家都在談論﹐而且(收音不良) 也參加很多次﹐MURRAY 贏過冠軍。今年也辦得很好﹐相信會很精彩的﹐很期待這個比賽﹐我會努力爭取冠軍。有好久一段時間我未曾贏過任何比賽了﹐因此期許自己在SAN JOSE 能打出好成績。也說不定喔﹐SAP 公開賽會是我苦等兩年後的第一個冠軍呢。
Q. Were you surprised that Andy didn't put up a better showing against Federer?
MARAT SAFIN: It's difficult for me to judge. But I was pretty sure that Federer was going to win. And it's sort of the way it is because Roger feels very comfortable against Roddick. And I was not surprised, but it was very easy. But the last few couple of matches it's been easy also.
So with all due respect to Andy, I think he's a great player. I think Roger, he's way too good for all of us.
Q ANDY 對陣ROGER 那場比賽一面倒的情勢是否出乎你意料之外?
MS 我很難去評斷什麼。不過﹐賽前我便料到ROGER 會贏﹐一直以來都差不多﹐ROGER 打 RODDICK 太有經驗了。這樣的結果我並不驚訝﹐過去多次對戰都是這樣的情況。對於ANDY我非常尊重﹐他是個優秀的球員﹐只不過 ROGER 太棒了﹐我們都很難超越。
Q. What does a loss like that do to a player's confidence?
MARAT SAFIN: Nothing, because you're not losing to somebody, some yo-yo guy; you're losing to number one, the one who won 10 Grand Slams and one of the best players in the history of tennis. So it's nothing to I think to worry about.
Q 那樣的挫敗對球員本身的信心有何影響
MS 沒什麼的﹐你要知道自己不是輸給無名小卒或一個痞子﹔你是輸給一位十座滿貫冠軍在手﹑網球史上最佳的世界第一。所以我覺得大可以看開一點﹐不用太憂慮的。
Q. On coaching, what's your view? Do you think coaching is overrated in tennis? Or is it really that important?
MARAT SAFIN: Well , it's important. Everybody takes it how you want. Some people they like to have somebody just to be comfortable and not to be lonely. Other people they need to work on some shots and some people they need to get the confidence somehow.
So everybody takes a different approach on those aspects. And, trust me, it's not really easy to travel alone around the world for 30 weeks a year. And you know it's nearly impossible. So you need to be with somebody. And need somebody to hang out because the tennis is a very personal thing, sport. So we need some support. We need some kind of good environment around you.
So I think you need to have somebody with you for, not full time, but somebody who knows about tennis.
Q 有關教練事宜﹐你抱持什麼觀點? 大家是否太高估教練的功效了?或者教練好壞真的很重要呢。
MS 嗯 (天阿﹐WELL真是MARAT 的口頭蟬﹐ WELL ......) ﹐教練是很重要的。每個人的需求不盡相同﹐有些人在巡迴時喜歡有人陪同﹐不想孤單旅行﹔有些人想加強一些技術﹐而有些是希望藉由教練的鼓勵來提昇自信心。
因 此每個人找教練的方向便不一樣。相信我﹐一年內30個星期獨自世界巡迴真的不容易﹐幾乎是不可行的。你一定要有人隨行﹐網球是種個人運動﹐球員總是辛苦孤 軍奮鬥﹐所以會希望有個同行的伙伴﹐不只在心理上給予支持﹐也能在舒適的氛圍中比賽。因此我覺得起碼要有一個懂網球的人陪著你﹐不一定要全時間陪伴﹐但至 少不是整年都寂寞巡迴。
Q. But in the case of like Connors and Roddick, can somebody really come in there and have that big an effect on their game?
MARAT SAFIN: Andy has improved a lot since he's been working with Jimmy. So I think in his case he played a very big role.
Q 以CONNORS 及 RODDICK 的組合為例﹐真的有人能有如此影響一位球員﹐使他蛻變嗎
MS 自從和CONNORS合作後﹐ANDY 大幅進步﹐他們的組合來說﹐CONNORS 功不可沒。
Q. Marat, could you describe your personality and your approach to tennis?
MARAT SAFIN: Again?

MS 請再說一次? (還是他不耐煩﹐意指 "又來了?" 就不得而知了)
Q. Could you describe your personality and your approach to tennis?
MARAT SAFIN: Well , I don't know. I have to live how I want to live. That's how I am and it doesn't matter if people don't like me, but it's how I see the world, how I am. I couldn't judge. I think it's more for the people and for the (inaudible) for them to judge how they see me. But the way I'm living, I'm pretty satisfied that's how I am. Or is it somebody likes it, it's good; somebody doesn't like me, I have nothing to worry about.
Q 說說你的個性﹐還有你怎麼看待網球事業吧
MS 這個嘛﹐我不知道阿。我必須依照自己的想法生活﹐我就是這樣的人﹐就算大家不喜歡我也無所謂﹐我處世態度一向如此﹐隨性而活。我無法給自己評分﹐別人才能 吧﹐還有(收音不良)....是怎麼談論我。不過﹐我很滿足現狀與自己生活的方式。如果有人也喜歡當然很好﹐如果有人不喜歡﹐也沒什麼好煩惱的。
Q. I think you were quoted in Australia as saying that it's more important for you to be a normal person than to be number one. Is that true?
MARAT SAFIN: Well , I want to live my life. It doesn't matter -- of course I want to be number one in the world. But I don't want to also, I want to live and enjoy my life.
So if it's fate, then it's fate. It was fate six years ago. So it's nothing wrong about it, living my own life, how I see it with being number one in the world and just some people -- there's a lot of different personalities in the world of tennis and the world of sports. So everybody sees it a different way.
And I see it this way and differently, of course, that I want to become number one in the world again. In my case I was already. So again I would like to do that.
Q 在澳洲時﹐你好像提到作一個凡夫俗子比當世界第一重要。真的嗎
MS 嗯﹐我過想過的生活。其實那無關緊要----當然我也想成為世界第一﹐然而我也不願犧牲快樂﹐我希望好好活著享受人生。所以﹐如果那是宿命﹐就不用強求 了。六年前的冠軍也是宿命阿 (2000美網)。我覺得一切都很好﹐照著自己的意思去做﹐而我對於世界第一的想法...網壇及體育界有太多人了﹐大家對於成為世界第一的觀點都不一樣。
我是這麼想的﹐或許跟別人差別較大﹐我不諱言自己也想要再次回到世界第一﹐我曾經爬上頂端﹐如果可以﹐我自然也想再重回巔峰的。
Q. You've had more success against Pete Sampras than against Federer. Do you think Federer is better than Sampras and, if so, why?
MARAT SAFIN: Well , for the moment Pete has more Grand Slams than Federer. But Federer has the potential to become better than Sampras. So (inaudible).
Q 你對陣山普拉斯比對費德勒的記錄還好。你覺得費德勒相較於山普拉斯更優秀嗎﹐為什麼?
MS 嗯﹐目前山普拉斯手中滿貫的獎杯比費德勒多。但費德勒有潛力超越山普拉斯...所以(收音不良)...
Q. On your better days, do you have a chance to beat Federer?
MARAT SAFIN: I would love to think this way. But I think in this case it's very difficult. Very difficult. But why not? We all can dream and all the dreams are for free.
So hypothetically, yes. But theoretically, it's completely different.
Q 當你狀態好時﹐你能否擊敗費德勒?
MS 我希望是如此的。不過﹐現實是另一回事﹐那很難﹐真的很難。但是﹐也許真的可以呀。我們都能幻想﹐作作夢又何妨﹐不花錢嘛。假設性來講﹐是可能的﹔回到理論上呢﹐又是完全不同的一回事。
Q. And do you live in Moscow or do you have homes elsewhere?
MARAT SAFIN: Well , I travel around -- I come for a few days Moscow just now. And I've been in Spain and I came to Monaco. So I am with everybody everywhere and I don't really have a home.
Q 你住莫斯科或者別處還有家?
MS 嗯﹐到處飄泊---幾天前到莫斯科來﹐之前在西班牙﹐也到摩納哥。我四海為家﹐沒有一個固定的居所。
Q. Do you like that style?
MARAT SAFIN: I enjoy it. I'm only going to be one 27.
