Canas Stuns Federer for Second Time in 2 Weeks

Tough Argentine Guillermo Canas became just the second player to defeat Roger Federer more than once during his unbroken 165-week reign as ATP World No. 1 after edging the Swiss 7-6(2), 2-6, 7-6(5) in an epic battle in the fourth round of the Sony Ericsson Open Tuesday. And Canas has achieved the rare feat in just over two weeks, having first beaten Federer in the second round of the Pacific Life Open on March 11. Federer lost just two matches on hard courts all of last year.

Canas, who had to win two qualifying matches to make the main draw, continued his stunning comeback following a 15-month doping suspension. Canas was ranked No. 514 when he returned to the ATP circuit in September last year but has cut that to No. 55 and will break into the Top 50 by reaching the Miami quarterfinals.

The first set was a battle between Federer's powerful shot making (18 winners to seven) and Canas's dogged determination and baseline retrieving, which often lured the top seed into error as he pressed for too much. Federer made 19 unforced errors to Canas's 10 in the first set and also made a number of uncharacteristic blunders at the net and missed overheads.

But Federer lifted a gear in the second set and his sublime shot making was on full display as he ran away with the set 6-2. Canas looked a beaten man early in the third set. Federer broke in the first game of the third set and soon after held two break points for a 3-0 lead as Canas's legs lacked their early spark. But the Argentine clung to life, eventually clawing back the break of serve to force a tie-break.

The decisive moment in the tie-break came when Federer served at 4/5 to the ad court. Having stretched Canas wide to the backhand, Federer took a swinging forehand volley at a high, mid-court floater, dumping it into the middle of the net to hand the Argentine two match points. Federer saved the first but then took a swing and a miss at a Canas first serve down the middle.

Federer later said of the missed swinging volley: "You're not going to take it on the overhead, but I didn't want to let it bounce, so the obvious choice was to forehand drive. It's a tough shot to hit. I guess at 15-0 and 1-0 in the first set, that's not a problem. But it was tough. It was getting into the night. It was day in the beginning and night in the end, and it kind of made it a bit tricky and I messed it up."

Another telling factor was break point conversions. Federer earned 16 break point chances but converted just four. Canas earned only five break point opportunities but converted three times.

Federer now sets his sights on the tough European clay court season as he attempts to complete his set of Grand Slam trophies at Roland Garros. "I'm going to play Monte Carlo, Rome, Hamburg, French Open, Halle, Wimbledon, and that's all big tournaments in Europe. It's going to make it hard. So I need a break here after this, and then I'm going to start practicing and get to Monaco early and hopefully play well."

The weather conditions in Miami at the Sony Ericsson tournament were very windy and Marat found it difficult to win his match and lost 5/7 6/7(2) to Feliciano Lopez.
Marat was very disappointed and is now travelling back home to Russia in order to prepare for the Davis Cup tie which is played on April 6 - 8,2007.

They last played at Wimbledon in the 3rd round in 2005 - Lopez won in 3 sets but that was when Marat had the knee injury and then was out of tennis for 8 months. Before that Marat beat Lopez in 3 sets at the Madrid Masters in 2004.

LAS VEGAS, March 3 (Reuters) - Marat Safin lost in the Las Vegas Open semi-finals on Saturday but was still content with his progress going into this month's back-to-back Masters Series events.
The Russian was beaten 7-5 6-1 by Australian second seed Lleyton Hewitt on Saturday but having struggled for form over the first two months of the year, Safin believes he is on the right track.
"It has been pretty good for me," Safin told reporters.
"I didn't play that well in San Jose but now I am hitting the ball pretty well, I just have to work on a couple of things and be a bit patient, not go for too much.

"I think the way I am hitting the ball is pretty good. I made the quarter-finals (In San Jose) and semi-finals (in Las Vegas). Maybe it is not unbelievable, but for me it is pretty good."
Things looked promising for Safin when he broke Hewitt in the opening game of the match but the Russian said his opponent had served well when it mattered.
"I had my chances," he said. "But he came up with good shots at the important moments and he was serving well. I was trying to play maybe too fast, that's why I made a few mistakes."
Good performances in Indian Wells and Miami this month would see Safin return to the world's top 20 from his present ranking of 24.
The Russian said he would be relaxing before making the journey to California for the first of the two Masters Series events.
"I will take two days off and just enjoy Vegas," he said.

Q. Hi Marat, welcome to Los Vegas

A Thank you very much. I had a great drive from Los Angeles.

Q We heard you also drove from San Jose to Los Angeles, why is that?

A I am not too crazy about flying and when I have time I enjoy driving and seeing
places. I drove on route no 1 to Los Angeles which was very nice and took photos
in Carmel and Monte ray , and the 17 miles drive and all in all it was a very
pleasant experience .

Q How was your week of practice in Los Angeles?

A I think it was very good. I worked hard with Miguel, my fitness coach, and it
helped me to adjust to the pace of the hard court. In San Jose I started the
tournament with hardly any practice because of my late arrival from Davis Cup.

Q When is Volkov joining you?

A Sasha and Sergei my doctor, will arrive on Friday in California and will work with
me in Indian Wells and Miami.

Q How are you enjoying Las Vegas so far?

A I've been here before. It's a fun place but I truly care more about the tournament
than the rest of the stuff that his city has to offer. I look forward to a great week
and hope to see some of my fans in the stands.
